I Went to School Hungry

A Poem by R. Renée Bembry

This poem about being hungry at school goes with Theme Story Two "Because I Came to School Hungry". Just like the title of the story and the poem suggest, a kid is at school on an empty stomach. Many children wind up in class without proper nourishment almost every single day. Read to see how this girl handles things when her stomach starts grumbling.

If you have not read the Theme Story that goes with this poem, you can find it HERE. :}

I went to school hungry

Was slow with my bath

I went to school hungry

Could not do my math

I went to school hungry

Stomach growled at me

I went to school hungry

For being sleepy

I smelled the flavor of

Cinnamon oatmeal

Mom placed on the table

Though late I appeared.

But when I pulled chair out

To sit down and pig out

Dad cleared his throat loudly

And said, “Excuse me.

Girl, it’s time to go.

You got dressed way too slow.

Can’t be late for school.

That’s an important rule.

No time to sit down to eat

Breakfast— don’t frown— sorry

You must follow rules

Just like mom and me.”

How to introduce new foods to children

Introducing new foods to children could take some
strategic planning especially when the new foods are
green leafy things, round green things, or red meaty
things. Kids tend to view these types of foods as "adult"
food. This is why, for many kids, if food landing on their
plates does not consist of appetizers like pizza, burritos, nuggets, bacon, or pancakes, they do not want much to
do with it.
Moreover, it is a good idea to ensure children
are actually hungry when prompting them to try new
foods. Grumbling bellies may be more open to
unfamiliar dishes.

Should parents be accountable for overfeeding their children?

Overfeeding children could lead them to developing

diabetes mellitus type II, breathing difficulties such

as sleep apnea, shortened breath during exercise, and

low self esteem due to social deprivation; the latter

could lead a child to eating disorders such as bulimia

and anorexia in attempt to remedy a weight problem

in later years.

If your child is overweight, in particular, grossly

overweight, allowing him/her to remain in this

unhealthy condition could reduce his/her

chances of enjoying a longer lifespan healthy

individuals are predicted to have. Read more HERE

How to help your child not waste   food

When children are very young and especially when they

have never tried foods before they might want a large

serving of an entrée simply because it looks good. They

might not think about the fact that they just ate a short

time ago and will likely be unable to finish a meal size

entrée. Likewise, children often take more of everything

available at mealtime, whether or not they have recently

eaten, and wind up unable to finish the food on their

plates. This could happen when a child does not have

a big appetite or because a child ruined his or her

appetite by eating a snack before a meal. Read more HERE

How parents make an only child
over-protected or a brat

Whereas falling into the overprotective parent trap

or spurring a child into brat-hood could happen to

any parent, studies suggest these problems may

surface more when parents have an ‘only ‘ child.

Spurring an only into brat-hood sometimes occurs

when parents harbor guilt over not providing their

only with a sibling. In attempt to compensate for

their guilt, some parents repeatedly allow onlys to

have their way for requests that should be denied.

What’s worse is overprotection could instill

messages in onlys’ minds that they‘re incapable

of accomplishing certain tasks and should only

attempt such tasks at the approval of and sometimesoversight of their parents.
